• City of Houston Building Code Enforcement Violations (DON)

The Department of Neighborhoods Inspections & Public Service (IPS) enforces Chapter 10 of the City of Houston Code of Ordinances. Violations under this section include: 1. Open and vacant buildings 2. Nuisances on private property 3. Junk motor vehicles 4. Weeded lots 5. Graffiti

When a property is inspected and found to have probable violations, a "project" (case file) is opened against the property. Each project has each of the violations observed during inspection associated with it. Along with a project being opened after the inspection, notification is provided to the property owner and check-backs are scheduled to see if the property is brought into compliance. The City may choose to move the property though an administrative hearing and abatement process to bring the property into compliance if the property owner is unresponsive or unable to bring the property into compliance.

Properties with dangerous building violations are not considered "dangerous buildings" under the law until hearings occur and the administrative hearing process declared the structure as such.
